The Evolution of Swaraj Tractor: A Brief History

Swaraj Tractor Company was founded in 1974 to produce India’s first homegrown tractor. The name "Swaraj," meaning independence, was approved by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The first tractor, the Swaraj 724, was manufactured on April 14, 1974, in Mohali, Punjab.

In 2007, Mahindra & Mahindra acquired a major stake in Swaraj’s parent company, Punjab Tractors Limited. By February 2009, Swaraj became a part of Mahindra & Mahindra. In 2022, Swaraj sold over 2 million tractors. In September 2023, they introduced limited edition models.

Swaraj is now a division of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, specializing in tractors and farm equipment. It was formerly known as Punjab Tractors Limited, which Mahindra acquired in 2007, and the name was changed to Swaraj Division in 2009.
