Swaraj, Mahindra Susten Launch 42 MWp Solar Project in Punjab
Published - 02 Sep 2026 by Sakshi Yadav
Swaraj Tractors and Mahindra Susten have commissioned a 42 MWp group captive solar project in Bathinda, Punjab. The project is expected to meet around 50% of the electricity requirements of Swaraj Tractors’ manufacturing facilities in Punjab.
The project is among the largest group captive solar installations of its kind in Punjab. It is part of Swaraj Tractors’ long-term plan to reduce carbon emissions, increase renewable energy use and support sustainable manufacturing.
Solar Project to Supply Power to Swaraj’s Punjab Operations
Popular Tractors
Developed and commissioned by Mahindra Susten, the solar project will supply renewable electricity to Swaraj Tractors’ manufacturing, assembly and foundry operations in Mohali, Punjab. The solar facility is located in Village Teona Pujarian, Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda, and covers around 141 acres.
It uses N-Type TOPCon bifacial solar modules installed on fixed-tilt structures. The technology has been selected to produce higher energy output while making better use of the available land. The remaining capacity of the project is proposed to be used to meet the renewable electricity needs of other Mahindra Group companies located in Punjab.
The facility is expected to generate around 61.54 million units of renewable electricity every year and offset more than 42,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. More than 97% of the project components have been sourced from India, supporting domestic renewable energy manufacturing.
Swaraj Increases Use of Renewable Energy
Commenting on the project, Mr. Gaganjot Singh, Chief Executive Officer, Swaraj Division, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., said Swaraj was founded nearly 50 years ago on the principles of self-reliance and independence.
He said the company is working on two areas to support India’s shift towards cleaner energy: reducing energy consumption and replacing conventional energy sources with renewable energy.
Earlier this year, Swaraj received the Golden Peacock Award for Energy Efficiency. The company said it is now combining its energy-efficiency work with greater use of renewable energy, with more than half of its energy requirements expected to come from renewable sources.
The Bathinda solar project is part of this effort and also supports the Mahindra Group’s goal of becoming Planet Positive. Swaraj has also made progress in energy efficiency at its manufacturing facilities. In 2023, all Swaraj tractor manufacturing plants achieved EP100 certification for doubling energy productivity, seven years ahead of the Mahindra Group’s planned timeline.
Project to Save 1.92 Million Litres of Water
The solar project also includes measures to reduce water consumption. Semi-automated robotic systems will be used to clean the solar modules. This is expected to save around 1.92 million litres of water every year.
Environmental and social impact assessments were carried out during the development of the project, along with a climate change assessment. The project also includes measures for waste management, vehicle movement and reducing disturbance to the surrounding ecology.
Mahindra Susten Enters Group Captive Power Supply
Mr. Avinash Rao, Managing Director and CEO, Mahindra Susten, said the company is pleased to partner with Swaraj Tractors in its renewable energy transition. The Bathinda project marks Mahindra Susten’s first project supplying power to commercial and industrial customers through a group captive structure. This adds a new business model to its existing work of supplying renewable power to government utilities.
At the time of commissioning, the project was among the largest group captive solar installations in Punjab. It is expected to offset more than 42,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
Mahindra Susten is the Mahindra Group’s renewable energy platform and a leading Independent Power Producer. It has 2.1 GWp of executed IPP capacity and a 3 GWp development pipeline. The company works across solar energy, hybrid renewable energy solutions and energy storage, including Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
Mahindra Susten has 15 years of EPC experience and has delivered 4.8 GWp of renewable energy projects globally before moving towards an IPP-focused model. The company is also a co-sponsor of Sustainable Energy Infra Trust, a renewable energy-focused Infrastructure Investment Trust listed on the NSE.
Swaraj Continues Its Sustainability Initiatives
Swaraj Tractors contributes to the Mahindra Group’s Farm Equipment Business goal of achieving threefold revenue growth during this decade while focusing on business performance, people and the environment. The company has also continued its work in employee development, diversity and inclusion, and community development.
In February 2026, Swaraj received the Golden Peacock Award for CSR Excellence for its work to strengthen rural communities and support inclusive growth across Indian villages. All Swaraj manufacturing plants are water positive and certified as Zero Waste to Landfill facilities. Swaraj’s foundry was also the first foundry operation in India to achieve Zero Waste to Landfill certification.
The company plans to further work on reducing product-related Scope 3 emissions, increasing supplier decarbonisation, building ESG capabilities, expanding green dealership programmes and improving diversity across its operations.
The Mahindra Group has also received several recognitions for its work in sustainability and continues to include climate action and ESG practices in its business strategy, reporting and operations.
