Indian Tractor Expand Global Presence to 162 Countries with Emission Compliance

Indian tractor manufacturers have significantly expanded their global presence, reaching 162 countries. This growth was achieved through alignment with international emission standards, according to a study by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) released at the India Clean Transportation Summit.
TREM IV Standards Drive Global Growth
The study, covering trade data from 2008-09 to 2024-25, shows that stricter domestic emission rules under the TREM IV regulations helped Indian manufacturers enter European and Latin American markets. They also maintained a strong position in the United States despite tariffs.
Exports to the European Union rose from $38 million in 2008-09 to $181 million in 2024-25, achieving an 11% compound annual growth rate.
Belgium emerged as a key market, importing $28 million worth of tractors in 2024-25, up from almost zero just two years earlier. Medium category tractor exports to Belgium jumped 200 times in a year after TREM IV came into effect. Brazil also showed rapid growth, with exports surging from $4.5 million in 2017-18 to $88 million in 2024-25.
Key Markets and Emerging Destinations
The United States remains the largest market, contributing 21% of total exports in 2024-25. While overall shipments fell 50% over two years, exports in the small (under 18 kW) and large (75-130 KW) categories grew, aligned with US Tier 4f standards, though the 37-75 kW segment saw reduced share due to differing regulations.
Emerging markets in Asia and Africa also recorded growth. Bangladesh grew 11% annually, Thailand 16%, and South Africa 13%, particularly in the 37-75 kW range, while Mexico is emerging as a new destination.
Future Outlook: TREM V Standards and Competitiveness
India’s TREM V standards, set to be enforced in April 2026, will align domestic emission norms with the EU while exceeding US requirements, moving from Euro IV to Euro VI equivalent standards. The ICCT noted that India’s recent reduction in GST on tractors could further improve affordability for farmers while boosting global competitiveness.
India’s leap from Euro IV to Euro VI shows strong commitment to cleaner transport. TREM V can modernize domestic tractor fleets and open new global opportunities,” said Amit Bhatt, ICCT India Managing Director. Aravind Harikumar, ICCT Researcher, added, “Stricter standards are not a burden - they are a bridge to global trade, powering rural growth and export potential.”
The study concludes that compliance with international emission standards is now a key factor for Indian manufacturers to access global markets and overcome trade barriers.
