ICRA Forecasts 1-4% Growth for India’s Tractor Industry in FY27

Published - 26 Aug 2026 by Sakshi Yadav

India’s tractor industry saw strong demand in July 2026, with wholesale tractor sales rising 20.1% year on year (YoY), according to an ICRA report. Retail sales also grew by 28.3% YoY during the month. The growth was supported by a low base from the previous year, steady farm income and better affordability after the GST rate cut on tractors. Wholesale tractor volumes had already grown by 23.5% YoY in FY2026.

However, ICRA expects tractor industry growth to slow to 1-4% in FY2027. The high sales base from FY2026 and the outlook for a below-normal monsoon could affect tractor demand in the coming months.

Tractor Demand Grows 20.1% in July 2026

Wholesale tractor volumes increased 20.1% YoY in July 2026. For the April-July period of FY2027, wholesale volumes were up 19% YoY.

ICRA expects growth to slow during the rest of FY2027. The strong performance in FY2026 has created a higher base for comparison. A weaker monsoon could also affect farm income and tractor purchases.

Monsoon Recovery Improves Farm Outlook

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecast southwest monsoon rainfall at 90% ± 4% of the Long Period Average for 2026. The forecast pointed towards a below-normal monsoon, with expected El Niño conditions being one of the factors.

Rainfall conditions improved after June. The overall rainfall deficit narrowed to around 12% as of August 10, 2026, compared with around 30% on June 30. Reservoir levels also improved during this period.

Kharif crop acreage was 2% lower YoY as of August 7, 2026, which was an improvement from the 21% decline recorded in late June. However, lower kharif acreage and a below-normal monsoon remain concerns for tractor demand.

ICRA Sees 1-4% Tractor Growth in FY2027

ICRA expects domestic wholesale tractor volumes to grow by 1-4% in FY2027. The report also noted that kharif and rabi foodgrain production for the agricultural year 2025-26 increased by 3% YoY, supported by good rainfall during calendar year 2025.

Continued MSP support and government subsidies may support farm income and tractor demand. However, the high base of FY2026 and the monsoon outlook could limit overall industry growth.

Tractor Companies Continue to Have Stable Credit Profiles

ICRA expects tractor manufacturers to maintain healthy margins, supported by operating leverage and stable raw material costs. It also expects the credit profiles of tractor manufacturers to remain comfortable.

The report points to good profitability, low debt levels and adequate liquidity as key factors supporting the financial position of tractor companies.
