New Delhi: India has achieved its target of generating 11 crore Farmer IDs across the country, completing the milestone five months before the March 2027 deadline. Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced the achievement, highlighting the government’s efforts to expand digital services in the agriculture sector.
The initiative is being implemented under the Centre’s Digital Agriculture Mission and aims to provide farmers with a unique digital identity. The system is expected to make access to government welfare schemes and agricultural services simpler, more transparent and efficient.
Farmer IDs to Simplify Access to Loans and Government Schemes
The Farmer ID system is designed to reduce repetitive paperwork and verification procedures when farmers apply for various benefits. It is expected to support access to agricultural loans, crop insurance, disaster relief assistance and other government schemes.
The digital identification system could also help improve the delivery of benefits by enabling authorities to verify farmers’ details more efficiently and reduce duplication in records. This is intended to ensure that eligible farmers receive assistance through a more streamlined process.
Digital Agriculture Mission Gains Strength
The Digital Agriculture Mission received Union Cabinet approval in September 2024 to strengthen digital infrastructure for Indian agriculture. Under this initiative, the government is developing systems to connect verified farmer records with agricultural services and welfare programmes.
According to the Agriculture Ministry, more than 6 crore farmers have already received direct benefits under various schemes through the Farmer ID-based service delivery system.
Centre and States Contribute to the Milestone
The achievement reflects coordination between the Central Government, state governments, Union Territories and district-level administrations. Officials and field personnel have played a key role in registering farmers and advancing the initiative across the country.
With the 11-crore target achieved ahead of schedule, the Farmer ID initiative marks an important step towards technology-driven agricultural governance. Its effectiveness will depend on ensuring accurate registrations, expanding coverage and making digital services accessible to all eligible farmers.
