Maharashtra, especially Pune, grows the most figs in India. They have a kind called 'Poona' fig, which is big and tasty. The hot and dry weather from the Western Ghats helps these figs grow well.
Fig trees grow well in the dry areas of Gujarat. Many farmers there make money by growing figs. Scientists are trying to find better ways to grow figs in Gujarat so that farmers can grow more and better quality figs.
Though not as widespread as in Maharashtra, fig farming in Uttar Pradesh is successful in Lucknow and Saharanpur districts with the 'Dinkar' variety. People there enjoy both fresh and dried figs.
Figs grow in parts of Karnataka like Bellary, Chitradurga, and Srirangapatna. People in Karnataka enjoy figs when they're in season. The state is working on growing more figs by finding better ways to do it.
Coimbatore is the centre of fig cultivation in Tamil Nadu. Figs are enjoyed fresh or incorporated into traditional recipes. Tamil Nadu has the potential to become a more prominent fig producer in India.
