Jute is a natural fibre crop that thrives in hot and moist areas. India is the top producer, followed by Bangladesh. Whereas West Bengal, Assam and Ganga Delta are prime cultivators.
This is India's largest jute producer, known as the "Jute State." Due to fertile soil and favourable climate, jute cultivation is prominent in Hooghly, Howrah, and North 24 Parganas.
Bihar's northern districts along the Ganges contribute to India's jute production due to alluvial soil and a suitable climate. Purnea, Darbhanga, and Katihar are the top producers.
Odisha's coastal regions, including Balasore and Bhadrak districts, are ideal for jute cultivation due to their proximity to the Bay of Bengal.
Assam's Dibrugarh, Jorhat, and Tinsukia districts have ideal climates and soil for jute cultivation, contributing significantly to production. In FY 2021-22, Assam produced 2127 kg/hectare of Jute.
Andhra Pradesh situated in southern India, is a major contributor to jute production. Krishna and West Godavari districts have ideal climates and soil for jute cultivation.
