Maharashtra is the largest onion producing state in india. This state is known for high quality onions. It contributes in no small amount towards the onion production of the nation.
Maharashtra produces 13,301.70 thousand tonnes of the nation’s onions annually. Particularly districts such as Nashik, Ahmednagar, and Pune are the key districts contributing to the state’s production.
Shining the spotlight on Madhya Pradesh’s emerging status as the Second largest, it is pertinent to say that it produces almost 8% of the nation’s onions. Production - 4740.60 thousand tonnes.
Along comes Karnataka, the third largest onion producer in India. Some districts that get Karnataka this status are Belgaum, Bijapur, and Bagalkot. Production - 2779.50 thousand tonnes.
Highlighting Gujarat’s significant contribution to the nation’s onion production, that is about 2554.70 thousand tonnes. And this percentage is often from Mehsana Banaskantha, and Sabarkantha.
Last in the list comes Rajasthan, with about 1447.90 thousand tonnes of onion production every year. It places fifth in this list of largest onion producers in the nation.
