India is a top exporter, providing 40,000 tons of essential oils and menthol crystals. Mint farming covers 300,000 hectares, mostly in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, and Punjab.
India is the biggest peppermint exporter worldwide. Uttar Pradesh makes up nearly 80% of India's peppermint production, says the National Horticulture Board.
Mint grows in Bihar's Madhepura district, mainly using the CIM-Karnti variety. Bihar contributes around 13% to India's total mint production.
Madhya Pradesh contributes approximately 15% to the national menthol mint production, with dedicated cultivation areas like Chhatarpur district focusing on Mentha arvensis (menthol mint).
Uttarakhand contributes 5% to India's menthol mint production, alongside Punjab and Haryana. It focuses on Japanese mint, mainly in tarai districts like Rudrapur and Bilaspur.
Punjab, along with Haryana, makes up about 5% of India's menthol mint production. However, Punjab's individual share is likely lower, around 2-3%.
