Sugarcane thrives in hot, humid climates, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. It is the primary source of sugar production due to its tall, thick, sugary stalks.

Maharashtra leads sugarcane production in India, with over 138 lakh tonnes in 2022-23, thanks to its reliable water supply. Key producing areas include Pune, Satara and Solapur.

In 2022-23, Uttar Pradesh ranked second in India's sugarcane production, reaching 105 lakh tonnes, notably in districts like Meerut, Bareilly, Saharanpur, and Bulandshahr.

Karnataka is India's third-largest sugarcane producer, boasting over 38 MT in 2019-20. This success is attributed to favourable climatic conditions and the impact of Cauvery River irrigation.

Tamil Nadu ranks fourth in India for sugarcane production, averaging 18.5 MT annually. Despite this, it leads to productivity, yielding an average of 99 tonnes per hectare.

Bihar, known for its fertile plains, is a top producer of sugarcane and jaggery. The major contributors to this production are Patna, Darbhanga, Gaya, and Champaran districts.
