Milk production in India holds the top spot globally, with a 22% contribution to the total output. Other significant producers include the United States, China, Pakistan, and Brazil.
Uttar Pradesh is India's top milk-producing state, with buffaloes accounting for 16.2 MT (metric ton) of milk production and exotic/non-descript cows contributing 6 MT.
The milk production in Rajasthan was attributed to buffaloes, with a total of 7.2 MT, while exotic cows contributed 0.9 MT and non-descript cows produced 4.1 MT of milk.
Andhra Pradesh contributes 9.1 MT milk of buffaloes and 2.5 MT of cows. Whereas, chittoor is a major district that produces 40 lakh litres of milk daily in this state.
Gujarat is India's sixth largest milk producer, generating 5,862,000 metric tonnes. Banas Dairy, located in Gujarat, is one of Asia's leading milk producers.
Punjab produces 345 lakh kg of milk daily, comprising 6.7% of India's total production. It also has the highest per capita milk availability, with citizens consuming 1,181 grams daily.
