A GI tag certifies products from specific regions made traditionally and renowned for their unique qualities. It covers various categories, such as handicrafts and agricultural produce.
Tea from Darjeeling, India, holds a registered GI tag, the first Indian product to receive such recognition. The renowned beverage was awarded the geographical indication tag in 2004.
In 2017, Basmati Rice received the GI tag, recognising its unique origin and qualities. India and Pakistan co-own the tag but dispute exclusive rights, especially in the European market.
The Alphonso mango, renowned as India's mango king, earned the GI tag on October 3, 2018, for being grown in Maharashtra's Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and adjacent regions.
In 2005, Tamil Nadu applied for Geographical Indication for Kanchipuram Saris, officially recognized by India in 2005-06. These silk saris come from Tamil Nadu's Kanchipuram region.
In April 2014, Nagpur Orange received the GI tag under the Geographical Indications of Goods Act, acknowledging its distinctive origin and qualities in the Nagpur region.
