To boost pulse production: optimise soil fertility, adopt efficient farming methods, use high-yield varieties, employ organic fertilisers, manage weeds and pests, and provide farmer education.
Longer rotations are related to higher pulse yields. In contrast, short ones breed disease and limit productivity. Opt for extended rotations for healthier soil and better yields.
Prioritise top genetics, then vital seed testing: vigour, germination, disease, damage. Ascochyta is not seed-transmissible—test 1000 kernel weight for seeding rates while in the lab.
Critical weed control: 2 weeding stages at 25-30 and 45-60 days post-planting. Pre-plant Fluchloralin, post-plant Alachlor/Metribuzin, plus hand weeding and cultivation for optimal growth.
Treat pulse seeds with captan or thiram to prevent diseases. Before planting, Inoculate with Rhizobium and phosphate-solubilizing bacteria for better nitrogen and phosphorus uptake.
Healthy roots vital for uptake: Peas (50 bu./acre) remove 35 lbs P, Lentils (30 bu./acre) pull 18 lbs. Replenish phosphorus and ensure seed safety; low-N lentils benefit from starter nitrogen.
