Peas Farming in India: Expert Tips for Bountiful Harvest

Published Sep 29, 2023

For a high yield, sow between late October and mid-November. Delayed planting results in lower yields. For the early market, some growers sow peas in the second fortnight of October.

Before sowing, use 3gm/kg of Captan or Thiram or 2.5gm/kg of Carbendazim. Apply Rhizobium leguminosorum culture emulsified in 10% sugar to seeds and dry in the shade for up to 8-10% higher yield.

When sowing, apply Nitrogen@20kg as Urea@50kg and Phosphorus@25 kilograms in Superphosphate@150kg per acre. Drill a complete dose of fertiliser along the rows.

Harvest only when they start changing from dark to green. Multiple pickings, around 4 to 5, can be done within a 6 to 10-day interval. Yield varies based on variety, soil quality, and field management.

Pea varieties may need two weedings. First at 2-3 leaf stage & the second before flowering. Effective weed control with Pendimethalin@1 ltr/acre & Basalin@1 ltr/acre, apply within 48 hours of sowing.

For successful germination, follow with 1-2 irrigations before flowering and during pod formation. Avoid excess irrigation to prevent plant yellowing and yield loss.
