What is Organic Farming in India: Types and Benefits

Organic Farming is a holistic system that promotes and enhances agro-ecosystem health. It uses biological fertilisers and pest control acquired from animal or plant waste.

Organic farming is nascent in India, while Sikkim was the 1st Organic state. India produced around 3430735.65 MT of organic products like oil Seeds, fibre, and Sugar cane in 2022.

The four principles are health, fairness, ecology and care. It roots organic farming with living systems and states that production should be based on ecology and recycling.

Shri Subhash Palekar is the father of organic farming in India. He drew his inspiration from ancient Indian farming techniques, at the heart of which are cow dung and cow urine.

Organic farming neglects the use of artificial chemicals, reducing ecological issues. It ensures earth, air, flora & fauna vigour and reduces soil erosion and air-water pollution.

The global organic farming market stood at 170 bn. USD in 2022 and is expected to exhibit a CAGR of 10.41 % and reach 375.50 bn. USD during the forecast period (2023 to 2030).
