Select a sunny spot with 6-8 hours of direct sunlight and well-drained soil. Avoid low-lying, frost-prone areas. Slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5-7.0) is ideal for grape vines.
Prepare the Soil and test soil pH and nutrient levels. Amend with compost to enhance fertility and drainage. Loosen the soil to about 12 inches deep. Well-prepared soil ensures vigorous vine growth.
Water young vines deeply once a week. Mature vines need water during dry spells. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases.
Install a sturdy trellis before vines grow vigorously. It supports growth, improves air circulation, and holds grape clusters. Tie vines loosely to the trellis as they grow.
Harvest grapes when ripe in late summer or early fall. Test for sweetness before picking. Use sharp scissors to cut clusters, and handle gently to avoid bruising. Enjoy fresh or use for wine or jelly.
