Preparing the soil is crucial before planting. Start by conducting a soil test to determine its pH level and nutrient content. Soybeans thrive in drained, fertile soil with a pH level between 6.0 and 6.8.
Choose high-quality, certified soybean seeds that are well-suited to your local climate and soil conditions. Treat the seeds with inoculants containing nitrogen-fixing bacteria (Rhizobium).
Plant the soybean seeds at the right time, ideally when the soil temperature reaches around 55°F to 60°F (13°C to 16°C). Use a seed drill or planter to sow the seeds at a depth of 2.5 to 3.8 cm.
Regular irrigation is vital, especially during dry days, to maintain soil moisture levels. Implement a weed management plan using pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicides.
Monitor the soybean plants regularly for signs of pests and diseases. Common pests include aphids and soybean cyst nematodes, while diseases like soybean rust and root rot can also affect them.
Harvest the soybeans when they reach maturity, typically when 95% of the pods have turned brown, and the beans inside are hard. This usually occurs around 100 to 150 days after planting.
