India's fertiliser production is set to hit 50 million metric tons by 2026, with a yearly increase of 2.7%. Currently ranked second globally, India produced 42.8 Mmt in 2021.
Uttar Pradesh leads fertiliser production with a robust agricultural sector. Gorakhpur, Kanpur, and Bareilly are home to several well-known plants that produce fertilisers.
Gujarat, the top fertiliser producer in India, has over 25% of phosphatic and nitrogenous fertilisers. Vadodara and Kalol make both fertiliser types, while others only produce phosphates.
Maharashtra's six plants produce 11% nitrogenous and 7% phosphatic fertilizers in India. Mumbai has three plants, with the other three in Trombay, Ambarnath, and Loni-Kalbhor.
The demand for fertilisers in Maharashtra is driven by its diverse agricultural activities. The primary fertiliser production districts include Udaipur, Kota, and Bhilwara.
Andhra Pradesh contributes 7% of India's capacity, producing 11% phosphate and 3.5% nitrogenous fertilisers. Major centres: Vishakhapatnam, Ramagudam, Hyderabad, Tanukur, Nidadavole.
