India leads as the top mango producer, contributing 40% of the global supply. With over 2.2 million hectares and 20 million tonnes annually, it’s a crucial agricultural sector.
Establishing a mango farm costs vary by land size, location, and variety. In Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, it costs an average of Rs. 56,873 per hundred plants.
This includes labour for pruning and harvesting, fertilizers and pesticides. Further, it requires irrigation maintenance, and transportation of harvested mangoes to markets.
Despite initial and recurring costs, mango farming can be profitable, with studies showing average net returns exceeding Rs. 2 lakh per hectare in Tamil Nadu's Dharmapuri district.
Enhance mango farm profitability with intercropping, processing surplus mangoes into value-added products like jams or dried fruit. Direct marketing to consumers via farmers as well.
Mango farming in India offers significant profit potential despite initial costs. With careful planning, maximising yields, and seeking guidance, it can be a rewarding and lucrative crop.
