Dragon fruit, also known as pitaya, is a tropical fruit in growing demand in India. Due to its nutritional benefits and unique appeal, dragon fruit farming offers high profitability.
Dragon fruit thrives in warm, humid climates with temperatures between 20-30°C. Well-drained, sandy loam soil with pH 6-7 is ideal. The plant requires good sun exposure for optimal growth.
Propagation is mainly done through stem cuttings. Dragon fruit plants are spaced 2-3 meters apart for maximum yield, and proper trellising is essential for support and growth.
Dragon fruit requires moderate irrigation, especially during dry periods. Organic manure, NPK fertilizers, and micronutrients help boost plant health and fruit production.
Common pests like aphids and diseases like anthracnose can impact dragon fruit crops. Using organic pesticides and practising crop rotation helps in pest control and disease prevention.
Dragon fruit is ready for harvest after 30-50 days of flowering. On average, a well-maintained dragon fruit farm can yield up to 10-15 tonnes per hectare annually.
