Cloves are suitable for growing in a humid tropical climate with an annual rainfall of 150-250 cm.
Cloves are easy to cultivate in rich loamy soils in the wet tropics & heavier red soil with good drainage properties.
Cloves, a mixed crop, are easy to cultivate with various crops such as coffee gardens, coconut & areca nut.
Frequent irrigation is important during the initial 3-4 years of clove cultivation. Watering adult plants ensures better yield & quality cloves.
The cloves are ready to harvest when they turn pink and are about 2 centimetres long.
The most commonly popular and traded commercial varieties of cloves are Zanzibar, Penang, and Amboyna.
