From Soil to Spice : Cinnamon Farming in India

Published Aug 21, 2023

Cinnamon thrives in India, including Assam, Karnataka, and the Western Ghats. It's catching on in Maharashtra's Konkan too. You can pot cinnamon plants because it grow as bushes.

This tree thrives on sandy laterite soil patches on India's West Coast with few nutrients. It grows at sea level up to 1,000 m, mainly relying on 200-250 cm of annual rainfall.

To prepare the land, dig 50 cm x 50 cm x 50 cm pits 3 m apart. Fill with compost and topsoil before planting. Best to plant cinnamon in June-July, using the monsoon for seedling growth.

Watering varies with climate and soil moisture. New seedlings need frequent watering for strong roots. Keep soil moist, irrigate when it dries, and prevent water stress for cinnamon.

Feed cinnamon trees every 2-4 weeks from spring to fall with 8-3-9 fertilisers. Use 1/4 cup for every 4.5 sq. m of root zone. Spread it to outer roots for maximum benefit.

The best time to harvest shoots is Sep to Nov. Ideal cinnamon bark comes from even brown side shoots with finger-like thickness. Use a test cut with a knife for the right peeling time.
