Chia Seeds Farming in India

Published Sep 21, 2023

Chia seeds are like Ramdana. They sell for about 1500-1800 rupees per kg. Growing them costs around 75,000 rupees per bigha, and you can profit from 1.5 to 2 lakh rupees.

To cultivate plentiful chia seeds, create loose soil and ensure ample moisture. Plant them in the cool Rabi season, typically in October and November.

Plant seeds 30 cm apart initially, then reduce to 15 cm after 15-20 days. Boost growth with cow dung and vermicompost. Use 1-1.5 kg of seeds per acre.

Chia seeds typically take approximately 115 days to reach maturity. Once mature, the entire crop is uprooted and left to dry for five days before the threshing begins.

Prepare the soil, sprinkle seeds, press them gently, and water regularly. Chia seeds sprout in 7-10 days. Thin them out once they reach 4-5 meters with 5-6 pairs of leaves.

Chia grows fine with low fertiliser (about 89 lb/acre of nitrogen) or even without it. It likes regular watering, needing up to eight during the growing season, depending on the weather.
