Broccoli farming offers a rewarding opportunity with high nutritional value. This concise guide covers essential aspects from land prep to harvest, aiding novice and experienced growers.
To ensure optimal growth conditions for your broccoli crop, preparing well-drained, fertile soil with a pH ranging from 6.0 to 7.0 is crucial, emphasising the importance of soil testing and proper soil preparation.
Plant broccoli seeds in rows, spacing them about 18-24 inches apart. Leave 24-36 inches between rows. Transplant seedlings when they have 2-4 true leaves, maintaining the same spacing.
Apply well-rotted compost or organic manure before planting broccoli. During growth, use a balanced fertiliser with higher nitrogen early on, followed by higher phosphorus and potassium for better fruiting.
Broccoli requires consistent soil moisture, so employ drip or overhead irrigation. Water evenly, avoiding waterlogging, to keep the soil moist for optimal growth and head development.
Harvest broccoli when the heads are firm, dark green, and approximately 4-7 inches in diameter. Cut the main head with a sharp knife, leaving some stems for possible side shoots.
