Guide to Black Tomato Farming in India

Published Apr 10, 2024

Variety Selection

Select a tomato variety for farming from Cherokee Purple, Indigo Rose and Black Krim. You have to choose according to your soil, climatic conditions and local preferences.

Soil Preparation

To find out the pH and nutrient levels of the plot you've selected, test the soil. Adjust the soil as necessary to establish ideal conditions for growth. Compost and other organic matter can be added to improve soil fertility.

Climatic Conditions

Since black tomatoes are usually a warm-season crop, their growth is best achieved during a frost-free period. Make sure the area you have chosen gets lots of sunlight, ideally six to eight hours per day.

Planting and Care

Plant your black tomato plants indoors six to eight weeks ahead of the anticipated last frost date. When the soil has warmed, transplant the seedlings into the outdoor garden.

Harvesting

After transplanting, black tomatoes are usually ready to be harvested 75–90 days later. When the fruits are completely coloured and have a slight give to them, harvest them.
