The King of Spices finds its origin in the Western Ghats, while Kerala accounts for 90% of the overall production. Due to its global value, It is also called “Black Gold”.
It brings taste, benefits and cure. Black pepper is anti-biotic and improves digestion and dental health. It also helps with weight loss, prevents diseases and boosts metabolism.
Locally known as Kali Mirch, miriyalu and karu kurumulagu. Its commercial varieties include Panniyur 1,2,3,4,5, Subhakara, Sreekara, Panchami and Pourami.
Black Pepper thrives in hot and humid climates. It is cultivated on a wide variety of soils- sandy, loamy. It should be planted at a specific distance of 3-4 m in small pits.
Weeding must be done in May-June and Oct-Nov. Dimecron 85 EC@, Blue Copper, Ammonium Sulphate, and FMY must be applied for disease control.
Black Pepper berries are ready to harvest between 6 months to 7 months of planting. The harvest month is from November to March.
