What is Ashwagandha?

It is a tropical shrub found and grown primarily in Asia and Africa. The herb is also known by the name Indian Ginseng and belongs to the Solanaceae family.

Ashwagandha benefits

The ayurvedic shrub has a proven record of treating stress and anxiety. Furthermore, the medicinal shrub is also used in treating symptoms of insomnia and acts as an anti-ageing agent.

Soil requirements

The medicinal shrub requires and gives the best cultivation results in mild red soil, sandy loam, black, or heavy soils.

Weather conditions

Ashwagandha has been found to grow best in temperatures ranging from 20-38 degrees Celsius. However, as a matter of fact, the shrub can also handle temperatures as low as 10 degrees Celsius.

Seeding & Planting Process

Before planting Ashwagandha, the soil needs to be reconfigured with 50% soil, 20% peat moss, and 30% vermicompost. The seeding rate should be 10-12 Kg per hectare.

Harvesting

The medicinal shrub is harvested after 150-180 days on the plantation. At the same time, when the leaves become dry and the berries turn orange, the herb becomes ready to harvest.
