Lucknow: Tractor ownership in Uttar Pradesh has jumped by over 62% in just eight years. The number has grown from 88,000 in 2016-17 to 1,42,200 in 2024-25, according to a state government statement issued on Wednesday.
This surge is being linked to a sharp rise in farmers’ income. A government spokesperson said that tractors are now used for more than just ploughing. They play a key role in land levelling, spraying fertilizers and pesticides, making bunds, sowing seeds with seed drills, and even in planting and digging potatoes. Additionally, they help manage crop residues.
To facilitate this transition, the government of the state offers 50% subsidy on every tractor-operated agriculture equipment. The machines reduce labour expenses and facilitate more efficient farming operations such as land preparation, sowing, harvesting, and threshing. Consequently, tractor ownership as well as farmer incomes are likely to increase in the following years.
Nationally, the trend is also strong. Tractor sales in India are set to break all records this financial year. Around 10 lakh tractors are expected to be sold, crossing the previous record of 9,39,713 units in 2023-24.
The farmer welfare, according to the state government, continues to be a priority under CM Yogi Adityanath. He wants to make UP the "food basket of the country" by availing the state's rich agro-climatic regions, fertile Indo-Gangetic belts, water resources, and large labour force.
To achieve this, the state is blending traditional farming knowledge with modern agricultural science. Krishi Vigyan Kendras and the Million Farmers’ School program are being used to spread awareness and educate farmers. These platforms encourage the adoption of new and innovative farming practices.
Several key irrigation projects have been completed, such as the Bansagar project, National Saryu Canal Project, and Arjun Sahayak Project. These have improved irrigation facilities across UP.
Transparent procurement systems for wheat and paddy at Minimum Support Prices (MSP) are also in place. Farmers are now getting timely payments. More crops, including millets, have been added under MSP coverage.
Additionally, around 50 lakh sugarcane farmers in the state are benefiting from multiple reforms. These consist of modernization of sugar mills, establishment of new mills, extended crushing seasons, and quick payments. Proper operation of the PM-Kisan
Samman Nidhi scheme and timely availability of seeds and fertilizers have also contributed.
Because of all these efforts, UP's crop production—particularly that of pulses and oilseeds—has registered record growth.
