Tractor Retail Sales Increase by 34% in December 2020

Tractor Junction's research team created a monthly tractor retail sales report for December 2020. 

The Tractor industry has continuously been performing exceptionally well during the Covid era and the month of December 2020 was no exception. 67,802 tractors were sold in the Indian market in December 2020, resulting in a YOY growth of approximately 34% for the Tractor industry. The strong sales figures can be attributed to factors such as easy availability of finance, restoration of channel inventory after the festive season, higher Kharif output, higher rabi acreage and government support in agricultural produce procurement.

Although the domestic market share of Mahindra Tractors fell from 25.13% in December 2019 to 23.99% in December 2020, its domestic tractor sales increased by approximately 28%. The domestic tractor sales stood at 16,269 units in December 2020, against 12,702 units in December 2019.

Swaraj Tractors also registered a commendable growth of approximately 40% in domestic tractor retail sales, with 11,556 units sold in December 2020, against 8,264 units in December 2019. The company's market share increased from 16.35% in December 2019 to 17.04% in December 2020.
 
Sonalika Tractors reported a spectacular growth of approximately 62% in domestic tractor sales, with 9,353 units sold in December 2020, against 5,758 units in December 2019. The total domestic market share increased from 11.39% in December 2019 to 13.79% in December 2020. The company reported a 57.65% growth in total global tractor sales with 11,540 units sold in December 2020, against 7,320 units sold in December 2019. Overall, the company registered its highest-ever December sales figures and highest-ever market share of 16.1%. 

Chennai based tractor manufacturer Tractors and Farm Equipment (TAFE) reported a growth of approximately 39% in domestic tractor sales in December 2020, with 7,953 units sold against 5,726 units in December 2019. The company's market share increased marginally from 11.33% in December 2019 to 11.73% in December 2020.

Escorts domestic tractor sales grew by approximately 17% in December 2020 with sales of 7,291 units against 6,232 units in the same month in 2019. Escorts exported 503 units in December 2020, against 308 units in December 2019, registering a growth of 63.3%. However, the company's domestic market share decreased from 12.33% to 10.75%.

John Deere recorded domestic tractor sales of 5,099 units in December 2020, up from 3,446 units in December 2019, registering a growth of approximately 48%. The company's market share grew from 6.82% in December 2019 to 7.52% in December 2020.

Although the market share of Eicher Tractors fell from 7.33% in December 2019 to 6.47% in December 2020, its domestic tractor sales registered a growth of approximately 18% with 4,386 units sold in December 2020, against 3,706 units in December 2019.

New Holland witnessed a sharp increase of approximately 35% in domestic sales, from 1,891 units in December 2019 to 2,550 units in December 2020. The company's market share also increased marginally from 3.74% in December 2019 to 3.76% in December 2020.

Other Tractor OEMs such as Kubota, Preet and Force Motors all noted an increase in YoY sales.
