Budget 2025: FM Sitharaman Plans 10,000 New Medical Seats in 2026, 75,000 Over 5 Years

1-Feb-2025, Delhi: In the Union Budget 2025 today, Union FM Nirmala Sitharaman announced that 10,000 additional medical seats would be added to colleges across India next year. This is part of a larger plan to add 75,000 seats over the next five years.

Our government has added almost 1.1 lakh undergraduate and postgraduate medical education seats in 10 years, an increase of 130%. In the next year, 10,000 additional seats will be added in medical colleges and hospitals towards the goal of adding 75,000 seats in the next five years,” said Sitharaman.

Boost for IITs

Sitharaman also shared positive news for Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). She highlighted that the number of students in 23 IITs has grown by over 100% in the past decade. To accommodate this growth, additional infrastructure will be created at five IITs established after 2014, allowing space for 6,500 more students.

Focus on Upskilling and AI in Budget 2025

As part of a broader focus on higher education and upskilling, Sitharaman revealed plans to set up five National Centres of Excellence. These centres will bring global expertise and partnerships to help youth gain the skills needed for the 'Make in India, Make for the World' initiative.

In addition, a Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence for Education will be established with an outlay of Rs 500 crore.
